The Department of Road and Urban Transport at the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications, University of Žilina is a profile and guarantor department for the study programs: Road Transport (specialization: Road Transport and Expertise in Road Transport) and Forwarding and Logistics. The Department of Road and Urban Transport was established as a part of the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport during the founding of the University of Transport in Prague.

The department has been operating in Žilina since 1960. Since then, it has undergone some organizational changes, but its original profile has basically been preserved until now. In particular, it provides teaching of profiling disciplines, namely: road and urban transport technologies; traffic engineering; roads; road vehicle dynamics; logistics; storage; road vehicles; road transport business; freight forwarding; public passenger transport; integrated transport systems; information and communication technologies in road transport and freight forwarding; economics in transport and logistics companies; traffic planning; road vehicle diagnostics, maintenance; intelligent transport systems and others.

The department is also known for its activities in the field of road safety. The Institute of Forensic Engineering was established here, which is the only specialized workplace for the education of transport experts in the Slovak Republic and is currently an independent institute of the University of Žilina in Žilina. The department is also known in the professional public for its activities in the field of lifelong learning for professional practice with a focus on managers in road freight transport, bus transport, urban public transport, freight forwarding and logistics. It has close cooperation with practice, and for example in cooperation with the Association of Logistics and Forwarding of the Slovak Republic accredited the globally recognized course Forwarding - Forwarding Expert FIATA Diploma, which has been provided since 2008. The department is taught by experts who are known abroad and they work on innovating the content of individual subjects so that they meet the current and future requirements for graduates who are very well applied in the transport and logistics sectors. According to the completed study program, our graduates acquire professional competence in road transport and forwarding, which increases their prospects of successful employment in the field they have studied.
