Field of study: Transport
Study program: Forwarding and logistics
Transport and transport companies are going through a period of radical changes. These changes are mainly associated with rapid development in logistics, forwarding, information and communication technologies. The basic characteristics of this development are outsourcing, value chains oriented to the integration of services and the rapid development of electronic business and trading. Providers of transport and transport-related services are currently represented by companies that provide all activities within the logistics chain with added value. The transition to a market economy in the Slovak Republic created conditions for the application of a global trend in the field of transport as the separation of organizational and management activities in transport from executive activities – relocation of things and persons in space and time. On the basis of this trend in the field of freight transport, transport organizations focused on "Forwarding" were established in the Slovak Republic, which procure the transport of goods and services related to transport. Based on this development, there is an inevitable need for qualified workers in this area. The Forwarding and logistics study program fulfils these tendencies and also meets the requirement of the Association of Logistics and Freight Forwarding of the Slovak Republic to train experts for this dynamically developing business sphere. The sphere in the licensed business "forwarding" currently has a great need for such experts.
Graduates of the 1st degree of university studies of the Forwarding and logistics study program can analyze fundamental problems, processes in the provision of transport services, related legislation and economic-legal relations, in particular the responsibility of the carrier and the forwarder for damage, partial or complete loss of the transported shipment. Graduates must be able to use the advantages of all types of transport and their combinations to ensure the needs of customers. They have basic knowledge of business, organization and financial management of transport and forwarding organizations. Graduates of the transport department have the knowledge prescribed by the legislation for professional competence for carrying out licensed business in road transport and forwarding. The graduate will acquire theoretical knowledge in the area of mathematical and statistical foundations of transport technologies, processes and logistics systems, foundations of legislation in transport services, foundations of the transport system, foundations of economics and general economic theory, foundations of information technologies, foundations of transport and means of transport - their transport characteristics. On a theoretical basis, the professional disciplines of merchandising and material handling, marketing and business economics, commercial and operational activities in the road, rail, water and air transport, intermodal transport, logistics and transport services and forwarding are developed. The graduate acquires and understands basic concepts, approaches and methods in the field of using transport services and related activities (packaging goods and storage), can work out price calculations for different alternatives of transport services, and knows how to use information technologies in practice.
The graduate will acquire the ability to evaluate the transport conditions of individual modes of transport, specify the most suitable procedures in the selection of modes of transport, organize and ensure the operation of a small transport or forwarding organization, use information technology for managing the procurement of transport services and management of the organization, and evaluate the quality of provided transport services from individual carriers.
The graduate of this study fulfils the requirements for the professional qualification of a road transport operator and a professionally qualified representative for licensed business "forwarding". Graduates with experience can apply for the FIATA Diploma "Shipping expert". Graduates will find employment in forwarding and transport organizations in logistics departments in the executive functions of forwarders, dispatchers, and transport managers. They will also apply to the positions of operational managers and executives for ordering transport services in production and distribution organizations.
